FC Cincinnati's Season Concludes with Penalty Shootout Defeat Against NYCFC
FC Cincinnati's 2024 MLS Cup playoff journey ended in disappointment as they fell to New York City FC in a tense penalty kick shootout during the Eastern Conference first round. After a scoreless draw in their third match, the sixth-seeded NYCFC triumphed over third-seeded Cincinnati in a nine-round shootout at TQL Stadium on Saturday.
Cincinnati began the series with a victory but suffered a defeat in the second match, leading to the decisive shootout. NYCFC's goalkeeper, Matt Freese, emerged as a key player, making crucial saves while Cincinnati struggled to convert their chances, missing four of their nine penalty attempts. Despite a strong performance from their own goalkeeper, Roman Celentano, who made two saves, Cincinnati couldn't capitalize on their opportunities throughout the series, scoring only two goals against NYCFC's 48 shots. Head coach Pat Noonan expressed pride in his team's effort but acknowledged the disappointment of falling short of their goals.
